A big news has come out from Ratnagiri, Maharashtra. The auction of ancestral lands belonging to underworld don Dawood Ibrahim has finally been successful. In this auction conducted by the Central Government on March 5, two bidders from Mumbai bought all the four agricultural land parcels. These lands are located in Mumbke village of Khed taluka of Ratnagiri, which is considered to be the ancestral village of Dawood Ibrahim. The special thing is that many of these properties were registered in the name of his mother Amina Bi.
Auction held under SAFEMA law
This auction was conducted under the Smugglers and Foreign Exchange Manipulators Act i.e. SAFEMA. Through this law, the government confiscates the properties of those people who have been involved in smuggling or illegal activities.
Officials say that this step is being considered a major step towards disposal of properties belonging to the Kaskar family. However, the identity of the buyer has not been made public yet.
Payment and approval process pending
The bidder who wins the auction will have to deposit the entire amount by the beginning of April 2026. After this, final approval will be received from the competent authority and then the transfer of properties will be completed. According to officials, legal investigation and paperwork will also play an important role in this entire process, so that there is no further dispute.
This is not the first time that these lands have been auctioned. Earlier, several attempts were made in 2017, 2020, 2024 and 2025, but every time either bidders did not come or the auction could not be completed. Even after reducing the reserve price by about 30 percent in November 2025, no buyer came forward.
Major reasons for low interest
According to officials, there are many reasons behind the low interest of people in these properties. The biggest reason is considered to be the ‘stigma’ associated with Dawood Ibrahim. Apart from this, the land being in rural area, limitations of agricultural use and legal-social sensitivity are also big reasons. This is the reason why these properties could not be sold for a long time.
In this time’s auction, land of survey number 442 (Part No. 13-B), whose reserve price was Rs 9.41 lakh, was sold for more than Rs 10 lakh. Two bidders had participated in this. Whereas on the remaining three lands survey numbers 533, 453 and 617, only one bidder took part and he bought all the properties.
Properties were confiscated after 1993 blasts
It is said that these properties were confiscated from the Kaskar family in the 1990s. Later, after the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts, they were put under the control of the Central Government as part of the action against organized crime. From then till now, efforts were on to auction them, but due to various legal and social reasons the process kept getting stuck again and again.
Officials say that despite the auction being successful, the path ahead will not be easy. Problems like delay in payment, legal hurdles and taking possession of land have been encountered earlier also. At present, this auction is being seen as a big success, but the real challenge now will be to complete the process completely.
