Rajya Sabha elections are going to be held on 16 March. Voting will be held on a total of 30 seats in 10 states of the country, including seven seats in Maharashtra. Considering the current numerical strength in Maharashtra, six candidates of Mahayuti and one candidate of Mahavikas Aghadi (MVA) are likely to win. For the last few days, efforts were being made to do political calculations for this election.
Meanwhile, BJP has declared the names of its four candidates. There is also a possibility of Sharad Pawar contesting the elections. For this reason, now the discussion has started about all the seven seats of the state being unopposed. Let us understand the complete mathematics of victory and votes.
BJP announced names of candidates
BJP has declared the names of four candidates. These include former minister Vinod Tawde, RPI (Athawale faction) chief and Union Minister of State Ramdas Athawale, Hingoli BJP leader Ramrao Wadkute and Nagpur BJP leader Maya Ivanate. One seat each has been given to Ajit Pawar’s Nationalist Congress Party and Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena.
Sharad Pawar’s name almost decided
On the other hand, a candidate from Mahavikas Aghadi can go to Rajya Sabha. Sharad Pawar’s name is considered almost certain for this seat. Earlier, Congress had sought this seat for itself. From the Congress side, the names of former minister Balasaheb Thorat and former Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan were in discussion.
How is unopposed election possible?
If Sharad Pawar’s name is announced by Mahavikas Aghadi for the seventh seat, then BJP may be in favor of holding this election unopposed. But if any other leader of Thackeray group or Congress is made the candidate, then BJP can also field its candidate on the seventh seat.
A candidate needs 37 first preference votes to win. Mahayuti has the support of a total of 232 MLAs. Shinde faction has 20 extra votes, while Ajit Pawar’s faction has 3 extra votes. In such a situation, if needed, BJP can make full efforts for the seventh seat also. However, now if Sharad Pawar’s name is finalized for the seventh seat, then it is considered possible for all the seven seats to be elected unopposed.
