Gandhiji was working at that time to promote Hindu-Muslim unity and establish peace in violence affected areas. With the independence of India, the country was divided, resulting in fierce communal riots in Punjab and Bengal. Millions of people were displaced and thousands of people died in violence. He also started a hunger strike to bring peace in Bengal and to stop bloodshed.

At the time of independence, Jawaharlal Nehru and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel sent a letter to Mahatma Gandhi and called him to bless on independence day, but Mahatma Gandhi did not attend the event.
