Where were Mahatma Gandhi at the time of independence?

When India got independence from the British rule on 15 August 1947, the tricolor was waved at the Red Fort in Delhi and there was a festive atmosphere across the country. But Mahatma Gandhi was far from this celebration in Noakhali (now in Bangladesh) in Bengal. The reason for this was communal violence spread with the partition of the country. Gandhiji was working at that time to promote Hindu-Muslim unity and establish peace in violence affected areas. With the independence of India, the country was divided, resulting in fierce communal riots in Punjab and Bengal. Millions of people were displaced and thousands of people died in violence. He also started a hunger strike to bring peace in Bengal and to stop bloodshed.

What did you say in the letter?

At the time of independence, Jawaharlal Nehru and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel sent a letter to Mahatma Gandhi and called him to bless on independence day, but Mahatma Gandhi did not attend the event. He said in response to the letter that ‘I cannot be happy on August 15. I do not want to cheat you, but at the same time I will not say that you too should not celebrate happiness. Unfortunately, the way we have got freedom today, there are also seeds of future struggle between India and Pakistan. For me, peace between Hindus and Muslims is more important than the declaration of independence ‘. Let us know that when Jawaharlal Nehru was giving a speech of independence of the country, Mahatma Gandhi refused to attend any function. Because the tragedy of partition of India Pakistan shook him.
