Mahavir Jayanti 2026: Mahavir Jayanti is celebrated every year on the Trayodashi date of Chaitra Shukla Paksha. This day is celebrated as the birth anniversary of Lord Mahavir, the 24th Tirthankar of Jainism. This year Mahavir Jayanti will be celebrated on Tuesday 31 March 2026.

Lord Mahavir was born about 2,500 years ago (599 BC) in a Kshatriya royal family in a village called Kshatriyakund in Vaishali Republic. After birth, his parents named him Vardhaman, which means prosperity. Vardhaman’s father’s name was Siddharth and mother’s name was Trishala. Vardhaman was married to Princess Yashoda according to Shwetambara tradition. However, in the Digambara tradition, Mahavir has been described as a lifelong celibate.

At the age of 30, Prince Vardhaman thought of leaving worldly life and left everything and set out in search of truth and knowledge. After receiving initiation, he wore Devdushya’s clothes for more than a year and after this he became naked and did severe penance and adopted the path of penance. Following silence, penance, fasting and self-restraint for 12 years, finally after 12 years he attained Kevaljnana (Kaivalya) under the Sal tree on the banks of river Rijubalika.

After attaining divine knowledge at the age of 42, Lord Mahavir Swami spent the next 30 years of his life traveling in areas like Bihar, Orissa, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh. During this time he also propagated religion. After this, at the age of 72, Lord Mahavir attained salvation (Nirvana) in Pavapuri, Bihar on the day of Diwali on Kartik Amavasya.
