At least 9 people were killed and 80 others were injured when a bus carrying a wedding procession overturned in Latehar district of Jharkhand on Sunday (January 18). Police said that this accident happened in Orsa Bangladhara valley under Mahuadand police station area.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Kumar Gaurav said, “The bus carrying a wedding procession from Balrampur district of Chhattisgarh was coming to Mahuadand in Latehar. The bus overturned and five people died on the spot. Four women are included among those who died. The injured have been taken to the hospital.

Meanwhile, another official said that two more people died during treatment in Latehar hospital while two people also died in Gumla Sadar hospital. Gumla Civil Surgeon Shambhunath Chaudhary said that nine injured were referred to the Sadar Hospital here, out of which two were declared dead.
Chief Minister Hemant Soren, in a post on social media platform ‘X’, directed Latehar Deputy Commissioner to provide proper medical facilities to the injured.
80 injured, 32 people in critical condition
Sub-divisional officer (SDM) Vipin Kumar Dubey said that 60 injured have been admitted to Mahuadand Community Health Center and more than 20 have been admitted to a private hospital. He said, “32 people in critical condition are being sent to Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Ranchi for better treatment.”
The deceased have been identified as Reshanti Devi (35), Prema Devi (37), Sita Devi (45), Sonmati Devi (55), Sukhna Bhuiyan (40) and Vijay Bhuiyan. He told that the woman who died in Latehar Hospital is being identified.
The accident happened due to brake failure
Bus driver Vikas Pathak said that there were about 90 passengers in the bus. “The brakes of the bus failed,” he said. Despite trying to stop the vehicle by using the handbrake and switching off the engine, I could not control it and the bus eventually overturned.
