The date of public holiday on Makar Sankranti has been changed in Uttar Pradesh. The state government has changed the dates of the holiday on Makar Sankranti and announced a holiday on January 15. An order has also been issued by the government in this regard. The holiday declared on January 14 has been modified. This decision has been taken under the amendment made in the holiday list released on 17 November 2025.
According to the order issued by the Uttar Pradesh Government, as per the list of holidays declared for the year 2026 vide date 17 November 2025, the occasion of Makar Sankranti has been declared as a holiday on 14 January 2026. After consideration at the government level, it has been decided to change the date of the holiday and now declare this holiday on January 15, 2026.
Makar Sankranti holiday on 15th January
In the order issued by the government, it has also been said that the decision to declare Makar Sankranti holiday on January 15 instead of January 14 has been taken under the Negotiable Instruments Act 1881. It is also stated in the order that under the Negotiable Instruments Act 1881, 15 January 2026 is declared a holiday for Makar Sankranti.

According to religious beliefs, Makar Sankranti has special significance in Hinduism, this festival is celebrated on the day the Sun enters Capricorn in the month of Pausha. Taking bath and donating on the day of Makar Sankranti has special significance. On the occasion of Makar Sankranti, devotees from far away places reach Prayagraj and take a dip of faith in Mother Ganga. The festival of Makar Sankranti will be celebrated on 14 January 2026.
