Targeted at BJP
Addressing an election rally in Naxalbari of Siliguri subdivision of Darjeeling district, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee targeted the BJP and said, ‘Our government worked to provide forest rights to the tribals. He alleged that BJP does drama and perpetrates atrocities on tribals. Tribal people are being tortured everywhere. We built Birsa Munda College and built his statue. We have worked for them.
Questions raised regarding SIR
He accused the BJP of ‘hurting’ people by implementing the ‘wrongly designed SIR’ policy. He demanded that physical copies of the supplementary list published online should be made available immediately, so that the information can be verified. He said, ‘I have been told that out of the 27 lakh voters under consideration, eight lakh names have been removed from the first supplementary list. But where is that list? Why have physical copies of that list not been posted in government offices yet? She said, ‘I can confirm the information only after the list is published.’
Mamata Banerjee alleged that when elderly citizens are made to stand in SIR queues and questions are raised on their citizenship, ‘how can the BJP dare to seek votes from the same people?’ He announced, ‘As long as I am there, the work of National Register of Citizens (NRC) will not be done in Bengal nor will any detention camp be allowed to be built.
