West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has taken the SIR issue to Delhi. After meeting the top 3 officials of the Election Commission on Monday (January 2), he issued an open threat. Mamta Banerjee said that I can bring lakhs of people to Delhi and take out a procession in front of the Election Commission.
According to sources, despite the restraint exercised by the Election Commission officials, the Bengal Chief Minister continued to make false allegations and even slammed her hand on the table. Bengal BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari termed the Chief Minister’s visit to Delhi as drama.
Why was SIR not done in Assam – Banerjee
All the major parties including BJP are busy in their preparations for the Bengal Assembly elections. In such a situation, Mamata Banerjee is accusing the Election Commission of misusing the SIR to exclude genuine voters. To make his point, he asked the Election Commission why they did not conduct SIR in BJP ruled Assam. He alleged that the Election Commission is targeting Bengal and Kerala, not only this, Mamata Banerjee has called him an agent of BJP.
‘I have never seen such an Election Commission’
Talking to journalists after meeting the election officials, Mamata Banerjee said that I have never seen an Election Commission which is so arrogant. These people are big liars. We told him that we respect the Chairman because no post is permanent for anyone. You too will have to go one day, but do not set such an example and why is Bengal being targeted again and again?
Trinamool MLAs used abusive words against CEC
Mamata Banerjee and some leaders of Trinamool Congress wore black shawls and went to the Election Commission office in Delhi to protest. They also brought with them some people, whom Mamata Banerjee’s team claimed were families affected by the SIR process. According to sources, the Trinamool MLAs accompanying the Bengal Chief Minister used abusive and threatening language against the Election Commission and the Chief Election Commissioner.
Election Commission officials told Mamata Banerjee’s team that Trinamool workers and MLAs have vandalized the Election Commission offices and buildings in Bengal several times. He reminded Banerjee that there should not be any kind of pressure, hindrance or interference on the officers engaged in the SIR process.
