Pune mahatma gandhi statue news: The statue of Mahatma Gandhi located in front of Pune railway station in Maharashtra was attacked by a person with a sharp weapon on Sunday (July 6). This case has created a sensation in the area. The accused accused has been identified as Suraj Shukla, who is a resident of Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh.
He was living in Pune for the last one and a half months and was running his livelihood by selling Rudraksha garland. Police said that at the time of the attack, Suraj Shukla had an ax -shaped object in his hand, which he was trying to damage the statue.
The mental condition of the accused is not normal- police
Local people said that Shukla suddenly attacked the statue, after which some people present on the spot caught him and handed him over to the police. According to PTI, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 2) Milind Mohite said that the accused seems to be mentally unstable. He said, “In the initial investigation, it seems that the mental condition of the accused is not normal. However, the ax has been recovered from him and he was deliberately trying to harm the statue.”
Congress strongly condemned this attack
After the incident, political response has also come to light in the city. Congress Pune unit president Arvind Shinde has strongly condemned the attack. He said that the accused had climbed on the platform with the statue of Gandhiji and was trying to damage him. Shinde also announced that Congress workers will ensure safety of this statue and will perform today (July 7) against this condemnable act.
The police have arrested Suraj Shukla and started investigation by registering a case under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code. The police is now preparing to send the accused for medical examination to investigate the mental state of the accused. This incident has created an atmosphere of resentment in the city, while Gandhiji’s followers and social organizations have condemned the attack and demanded severe punishment to the accused.
