US Foreign Secretary (Minister) Marco Rubio met on Thursday (July 10, 2025) with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Foreign ministers of both superpower countries have met on the occasion of the Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit.
However, the meeting took place a few days after the US President Donald Trump expressed objections when Russian President Vladimir Putin did not attend the peace talks over the Ukraine dispute.

At the same time, according to CNN report, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Lavarov did not make any kind of comment before this meeting. However, after the meeting, when Marco Rubio was asked about Lavrov’s message, he answered it with an eye.
At the same time, this Kuala Lumpur visit by Marco Rubio also included several meetings with its counterparts of ASEAN countries. Before the beginning, US President Donald Trump announced that if there are no business agreements as soon as possible, many ASEAN countries would have to face the tariffs imposed by the US from August 1.
A senior administrative officer told CNN, “The Trump administration has made it completely clear that trade and economics are the main focal points of America’s foreign policy. However, Rubio is not its main mediator, but still they may face questions and disappointments standing about tariffs during these meetings.”
Marco Rubio spoke on the importance of Indo-Pacific region for America
At the same time, during the meeting with his ASEAN equivalent and Russian foreign Sergei Lavarov, Rubio stressed, “America cannot ignore any kind in the Indo-Pacific region. When I hear any news that is said that perhaps America or the whole world can be confused with any incident in any part of the world, I would say that it is completely impossible.”
He said, “This is our view, our strong view and our reality, which will be written more than this century and any other part of the world for the next 50 years.”
