Maruti Suzuki is once again going to take a new step in the Indian auto market with eco-friendly technology. The company has confirmed that it will present the E85 FFV (Flex-Fuel Vehicle) version of its most popular compact SUV Maruti Fronx at the Japan Mobility Show starting from 29 October 2025. This new model is special because only 15% petrol and 85% ethanol will be used in it. This will not only reduce the running cost of the car but will also reduce the dependence on petrol. The company says that this version of Fronx will prove to be a sustainable and eco-friendly option for markets like India in future.

New and revised version of 1.2-litre engine

  • The new Fronx E85 FFV will use an updated version of Maruti’s 1.2-litre petrol engine, as previously seen in the WagonR Flex-Fuel concept. Although the company has not yet disclosed its power and torque figures, but this engine will be designed as per E85 standards (Ethanol 85%). This will give the engine better clean combustion, less pollution and more mileage. Besides, the specialty of E85 engine is that it is more durable and efficient than petrol engine.

How does the E85 system work?

  • E85 Flex-Fuel technology means that the car is designed to run on a mixture of 85% ethanol and 15% petrol. For this, some important changes are made in the fuel system of vehicles. The octane rating of E85 fuel ranges between 100 to 110, which gives the engine more boost and smoother performance. Additionally, its combustion is cleaner, which reduces carbon emissions and reduces engine wear.

Design and features

  • The design of the new Fronx E85 FFV has been kept similar to the existing Fronx. Its front has a wave-style grille, sharp LED DRLs, projector headlamps and geometric cut alloy wheels. The connected LED tail lamps at the rear give it a modern SUV look. The interior will also retain the feel of luxury features with features like dual-tone dashboard, large touchscreen infotainment system, and smartphone connectivity.

Current Engine Options in India

  • Maruti Fronx is currently available in two engine options in India (a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine and a 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine). Both engines have manual and automatic transmission options, while the 1.2L engine also comes with a CNG variant. The new Fronx E85 FFV will be based on these platforms, but due to the flex-fuel system, there will be a big improvement in its mileage, efficiency and performance.
