Maternal Mortality in India : In the last 20 years, there has been a decrease of 40% in cases of pregnancy, delivery or a few days later. This is a good news and its credit goes to better health services. But a new report has expressed concern that if steps are not taken on time, this improvement may stop.

The UN Agency (UNFPA) for the United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF), WHO and Sexual and Reproductive Health Affairs (UNFPA) has released a report on 7 April. According to this, there has been a decrease of 40 percent during pregnancy or delivery from 2000 to 2023 or in cases of differences of 42 days.

Why death occurs during pregnancy and delivery

How did deaths decrease

It has been said in the report that this situation has improved due to better health services, although since 2016 its speed has started slowing down. It is estimated that in 2023, 2.60 lakh women lost their lives during pregnancy and complications during delivery, which is a maternity death in about two minutes.

UN agencies alert

Financial support is expected to have a profound impact on maternity, newborn and child health services due to which UN agencies have appealed to take immediate steps. Director General of UN Health Agency, Tadras Adhnom Ghebreesus said that this report tells good initiative but the data shows how dangerous pregnancy is still in most parts of the world, while there are many solutions to prevent maternity deaths.

52 maternal deaths every day in India

According to the report of United Nations, 52 maternal deaths are happening every day in India, which is the highest in the world after Nigeria. This includes deaths related to delivery or pregnancy in maternal death. The report stated that maternal mortality in Nigeria is the highest in the world. In India, in 2023, 19,000 pregnant women died (Pregnancy Complications Death), which is 7.2% of the whole world. The second number is from India.
