The Supreme Court has agreed to hear the petition filed for Shri Banke Bihari Temple Corridor in Mathura. The petition requested the amendment of the court order to approve the proposed redevelopment scheme of the Government of Uttar Pradesh for the corridor. On Thursday (May 22, 2025), Chief Justice Bhushan Ramakrishna Gavai (CJI Br Gavai) and a bench of Justice Augustin George Christ agreed to hear the petition.
On behalf of Devendra Nath Goswami, a resident of Mathura, Senior Advocate Amit Anand Tiwari argued in the Supreme Court, after which the court agreed to list the petition for hearing. Chief Judge BR Gawai said, “We will list it.”
On May 15, the Supreme Court had paved the way for the Uttar Pradesh government’s Rs 500 crore scheme to develop the Shri Banke Bihari temple corridor in Mathura. The court had accepted the petition of the Uttar Pradesh government, stating that the fund of Shri Banke Bihari temple should be used only to make a handle area (holding area) made to buy five acres of land around the temple and control the crowd.
Devendra Nath Goswami filed a petition on May 19 and said that the implementation of the proposed redevelopment project is impractical and any effort to redevelop the temple complex without the participation of historical and operating people from the functioning of the temple can cause administrative chaos.
The petition claimed, ‘Such redevelopment is expected to change the religious and cultural character of the temple and its surroundings, which has a deep historical and devotional importance.’ Advocate Ashutosh Jha filed on behalf of Devendra Nath Goswami, stating that his client is a descendant of Swami Haridas Goswami, the founder of the temple and his family has been managing the holy temple for the last 500 years.
The petitioner said that he was actively involved in the management of the temple’s daily religious and administrative affairs. The Supreme Court had revised the Allahabad High Court’s order on November 8, 2023 on a PIL filed by the Uttar Pradesh government on 15 May, accepting the state’s ambitious plan, but refused to allow the state to use the temple fund.
