The Supreme Court has put a stay on the new rules issued by the University Grants Commission (UGC) to prevent discrimination in universities and colleges. The Supreme Court has asked the Central Government to re-draft these rules and till then there will be a stay on the implementation of these rules. Now the reaction of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo and former Chief Minister Mayawati has also come to light regarding this. Along with this, Mayawati has also made a special demand for the upper caste community.
BSP Chief Mayawati posted on X and wrote – “The new rules that have been implemented by the University Grants Commission (UGC) to prevent casteist incidents in government and private universities of the country have created an environment of social tension. Keeping in view the current situation, today’s decision of the Supreme Court to put a stay on the new rule of the UGC is appropriate, whereas in the country, in this matter, an environment of social tension etc. would not have arisen. If the UGC had informed all the parties before implementing the new rule. She would have been taken into confidence and would have given proper representation to the upper caste community under natural justice even in the inquiry committee etc.
what is the whole matter
Let us tell you that on January 13, UGC had notified new rules with the aim of promoting equality in higher education institutions. The petitioners who reached the Supreme Court regarding this had argued that these rules only mention discrimination against SC, ST and OBC classes. There is no provision for considering the general category as victims of discrimination. A hearing was held on this and the Chief Justice said that in the 75 years of independence, we have made progress towards a caste-free society, are we now going backward? Along with this, the Supreme Court issued a notice to the Central Government and UGC in this matter and put a stay on the regulations implemented on January 13.
