IIT Kanpur has taken a big and important step regarding the mental health of the students. After the suicide of two students on campus in less than a month, all new students will now be given a mental health screening in the first week. Its objective is to identify stress, depression or other mental problems in time and provide proper help to the students.
A PhD student and a final year graduate student had died at IIT Kanpur between December and January. These incidents worried both the institute and the Ministry of Education. After this it was decided that to prevent such cases in future, attention should be paid to mental health at the initial stage itself.
Mandatory mental health checkup of new students
Now every new student coming to IIT Kanpur will be subjected to mental health screening during the first week in the campus. This investigation will be done in a completely professional manner so that no student feels uncomfortable.
Immediate assistance to at-risk students
Trained counselors will directly contact students who are classified as having moderate or severe mental risk in the test. If necessary, they will be given a detailed assessment and may also be referred to a psychiatrist, so that they can get timely treatment and support.
Trying to create a sensitive environment in the campus
IIT Kanpur is not limited to just testing, but is working on making the entire campus mentally safe. For this, regular mental health awareness workshops are being organized for teachers, students and staff.
Three-member committee of the Ministry of Education
The Education Ministry has formed a three-member committee to review the incidents that took place at IIT Kanpur. This committee is headed by Professor Anil D. Sahastrabuddhe. It also includes a senior psychiatrist and officials of the Higher Education Department. This committee will investigate whether IIT Kanpur is properly following the government guidelines related to mental health or not. It will also give suggestions on the reasons for recent cases, shortcomings in the system and measures to prevent future suicides. The committee will have to submit its report within 15 days.
Training outside the classroom
Training regarding mental health is not limited to students only. This also includes security guards, medical staff, library and mess staff, so that anyone can recognize the early signs of crisis and help at the right time.
24×7 Mental Health Emergency System
Emergency mental health support is now available 24 hours a day on campus. The Center for Mental Health and Wellness and the Campus Health Center work together to provide immediate assistance in case of any emergency.
Now senior students in IIT Kanpur are playing the role of mentors for junior students. This reduces the loneliness of new students and provides them with reliable support. Programs, festivals and sports activities related to mental health are also organized throughout the year. IIT Kanpur says that along with studies, the mental and emotional health of the students is equally important. The institute is encouraging students to prioritize their own well-being and ask for help when they need it.
