Indian cricket team’s senior fast bowler Mohammed Shami has finally broken his silence. After not getting a place in Team India for the ODI series against Australia, Shami clearly said that fitness is not his problem, but the selection is completely the decision of the team management. Shami, who has been out of the international team since Champions Trophy 2025, is now preparing to make a comeback in Team India through domestic cricket.
Shami said- I am ready
In a video on his YouTube channel, Shami said, “Many people are asking why I was not selected in the Australia series. I would just say that the selection is not in my hands. It is the decision of the selectors, coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Shubman Gill. If they feel that I am ready for the team, they will call me, but I am practicing continuously and am fully prepared.”
Shami said that the rumors being spread on social media about his fitness are baseless. He said, “There are many rumors and memes going around, but my fitness is completely fine. I am working hard every day and working on my body.”
Questions raised on poor form and fitness
Mohammed Shami’s performance has not been special since his return to international cricket in the beginning of 2025. He took 11 wickets in 11 ODI matches this year, in which his average was 30.63. His best figures in these matches were 3/37. Apart from this, Shami’s performance remained lackluster in the IPL 2025 season also. While playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad, he took only 6 wickets in 9 matches. This was the reason why the selectors excluded him from the England Test and the matches against Australia A.
Shami is ready to return
Shami told that he recently played for East Zone in Duleep Trophy and he bowled about 35 overs. He said, “My rhythm was good and so was my fitness. I don’t think I am behind in anything. Staying away from the field is difficult for every player, but I am motivated and will continue to work hard to make a comeback.”
When will Team India return?
However, in the current selection policy of BCCI, Shami’s name currently seems to be out of the “scheme of things”. The team management is currently expressing confidence in the young fast bowlers, but if Shami performs consistently in domestic cricket, it may be possible for him to return to the T20 or Test team in the coming months.
