Everyone must have heard the name of Amla – sweet and sour taste and excellent for increasing immunity. It is also beneficial for skin, hair, digestion and heart. In Ayurveda it is also called ‘Amritphal’. We all know that Amla fruit contains Vitamin C in abundance. The properties of Amla are described in Ayurvedic texts like Charak Samhita, Sushruta Samhita and Ashtanga Hridayam. But have you ever thought how valuable its seeds, which we generally throw away considering them useless, can be?
Under the guidance of the most revered Swami Ramdev Ji and the most revered Acharya Balkrishna Ji, the scientists of Patanjali Research Institute have proved that Amla seeds also have amazing medicinal properties, and now this research is gaining fame at the international level as well. Through this research, we were trying to find out whether the oil extracted from Amla seeds can be useful in fighting any disease? We used a new technique for this research, this technique is Supercritical Fluid Extraction (SCFE).
There is no harm to the environment in this method
This is a modern and eco-friendly technology, in which no harmful chemical solvent of any kind is used. Traditional oil extraction methods use various harmful chemicals, which not only reduce the quality of the oil but also have a bad effect on the environment. There is no harm to the environment in this method. Carbon dioxide (CO₂) used in this method is also completely recovered after use, that is, it is a Zero Waste technology. The oil extracted through this technique also remains completely pure, and the natural nutrients present in it are not destroyed.
When research was done on the oil extracted through this technique, the results were shocking. First of all, it was found that this oil is effective against two harmful bacteria, these two bacteria are E. coli, which is responsible for vomiting, diarrhea and stomach infections. K. pneumoniae, which causes pneumonia and urinary infections. Both these bacteria form an impermeable sticky layer around themselves, which is called Biofilm.
Antibiotics have no effect
This layer is so strong that even antibiotics have no effect on it. Research has found that Amla seed oil breaks this layer, that is, this oil penetrates the protective shield of those bacteria. And the most special thing about this oil is that it is completely safe for the body.
A test called Ames Assay also confirmed the fact that this oil does not cause any harm to our genes, that is, it is non-toxic and harmless. In another research, the efficacy of this oil was tested on another harmful bacteria P. aeruginosa, which causes eye, ear, skin and urinary infections. The World Health Organization (WHO) has also declared this bacteria Antibiotic Resistant.
That means even medicines have no effect on this bacteria. But a special fatty acid present in this oil, Linolenic acid, eliminated the quorum sensing of this bacteria. The method that cells present in bacteria use to communicate with each other is called Quorum Sensing technology. The result of the loss of this communication medium was that the efficiency and effectiveness of the bacteria was reduced.
We also tested this oil on a model organism called C. elegans, which is used as a biological model similar to the human body for scientific research. First of all, these organisms were infected with P. aeruginosa bacteria and made them diseased. After that, unexpected improvement was seen by giving Amla seed oil.
With the use of this oil, the lifespan of these creatures increased, they became active and looked healthy, and their reproductive capacity also improved. Both these researches of Patanjali Research have been published together in the prestigious international journal Applied Food Research of the world famous Elsevier Publications. This is the first time that two of our research have been published in one issue of the same journal. This achievement is not only of Patanjali, but is a matter of pride for the whole of India and Ayurvedic science.
The risk of antibiotic resistance is increasing
This research is also important because in today’s time, when the risk of antibiotic resistance is increasing, that is, now there are many bacteria around the world on which medicines have no effect, so we need such options, which provide solutions to them. At the same time, through this research, a safe and natural medicine has been discovered, and this medicine has been proven completely safe in tests. Additionally, the ability of Amla seed oil to remove biofilm makes it an effective solution.
Now that it has been proven that Amla seed oil contains active ingredients that have the ability to kill harmful bacteria, many future possibilities have opened up, such as new medicines or creams can be prepared from it, which can also be useful in the treatment of skin infections, hair fall, or acne. Also this oil can be incorporated into herbal antibacterial products such as herbal sanitizers or herbal soaps. Apart from this, clinical trials of this oil can also be conducted in future so that its effect on the human body can be understood more deeply.
This research on Amla seed is not only a scientific achievement but also a change of ideology. While the whole world is running towards chemical medicines, Patanjali has proved that the biggest solutions are hidden in the natural things around us. And not being able to understand them is our ignorance, and this ignorance does not end until we revive our inquisitive nature and try to end that ignorance.
Amla seeds, which were earlier thrown away considering them of no use, have now become priceless in the eyes of science. Today the scientists of Patanjali have proved that when tradition and science go together, a new era begins. This research of Amla seed is also a symbol of India’s scientific journey which combines nature, tradition and innovation. And at the same time it revives the Indian tradition which says, “Nature is the greatest laboratory, and every plant a medicine.” So next time, when you eat Amla, do not consider its seeds as useless, because it has now been proven that a new future of health and science is hidden in them.
