More than 200 prisoners Ran Away from Pakistani Jails during Earthquake

More than 200 prisoners escaped from a Pakistan prison. As a precaution after the earthquake, there was chaos while taking out the prisoners from a jail there and at least 216 prisoners fled from jail. This information was received from media reports on Tuesday (June 3, 2025).

According to the news of ‘Jio News’, a prisoner was killed in the incident in Malir Jail in Karachi and three soldiers of the paramilitary frontier core and a jail employee were injured. According to jail officials, more than 80 prisoners were re -caught.

Earthquake tremors occurred in Karachi several times in the last 24 hours. Jail Superintendent Arshad Shah said that more than 600 prisoners were taken out of their barracks during the earthquake.

Arshad Shah quoted the news as saying, “216 prisoners escaped amidst chaos.” He said that more than 135 prisoners are still absconding and the search campaign is going on.

Law enforcement officers have launched a joint campaign to locate the absconding prisoners. It has been said in the news that Sindh Home Minister Zia-ul-Hasan Lanjar has called it the most serious incident of prisoners in recent years.

Minister Zia-ul-Hasan Lanjar said that all the absconding prisoners have been identified and targeted raids are being conducted in their residences and surrounding areas. He said that an inquiry committee will be set up to investigate the incident.

The news quoted the prison officials as saying that Malir Jail had more than 6,000 prisoners at the time of the incident, most of whom were involved in drug related cases.

According to the Earthquepth Monitoring Center of the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), mild tremors were felt in Karachi 16 times since Sunday.
