Today, heart disease has become the biggest cause of death for women across the world. It is shocking that while earlier it was believed that men were more at risk of heart attack or heart diseases, now statistics are showing that women are equally affected by it, and in some cases more so. Women often ignore their symptoms or associate them with some other disease, due to which treatment is delayed and the risk increases, so let us know why women are more victims of heart-related diseases than men.
Why is the risk of heart related diseases increasing in women?
For a long time it was believed that women were safe from heart disease, but recent research shows that this was a misconception. In fact, women are also surrounded by many types of risk factors. Like diabetes, high blood pressure, cholesterol, obesity, and bad lifestyle, their effect is different on men and women.
1. Diabetes – Women suffering from diabetes have a higher risk of heart disease, stroke and sudden heart failure than men. The possibility of death after heart attack is also found to be higher in such women. Therefore, to keep diabetes under control, regular checkups, balanced diet and taking medicines as per doctor’s advice are very important.
2. High blood pressure – After the age of 60, the problem of blood pressure is more common in women and it is difficult to control it. In such a situation, check blood pressure regularly, limit salt intake, exercise and reduce stress.
4. Cholesterol – The effect of high cholesterol on heart diseases in women is more serious than that of men. Therefore, take the statin medicines prescribed by the doctor regularly and avoid oily, fried and sweet foods.
5. Obesity – Obesity is a major cause of heart disease in women. Due to weight gain, blood pressure, cholesterol and sugar all increase. Therefore, walk for 60 to 90 minutes daily, do yoga or other exercises and take a healthy diet.
6. Physical activity – It is difficult for women to find time for themselves in their busy lives, but this is the biggest mistake. Being inactive weakens the heart muscles and slows down blood flow. Therefore, do at least 150 minutes of normal exercise or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise every week.
7. Smoking – Women who smoke have a higher risk of heart attack than men, especially after menopause, so quit smoking and also avoid passive smoking.
Special risk in women
1. Menopause – Before menopause, women’s body contains estrogen hormone, which protects the heart. But after menopause, when this hormone decreases, the risk of heart disease increases. In such a situation, hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is not necessary for every woman. It would be better if women adopt natural methods. Like meditation, exercise and balanced diet.
2. Pregnancy Complications – In women who have suffered from high blood pressure, premature delivery or diabetes during pregnancy, the risk of heart disease increases manifold in the future. Such women must tell their medical history to the doctor and get regular checkups done.
Easy ways to keep heart healthy
1. Quit smoking – This is the biggest danger for the heart.
2. Be active – Walk briskly for at least 30 minutes every day.
3. Take a balanced diet – Eat fruits, vegetables, whole grains and fish.
4. Keep weight under control – Keep BMI less than 25 and waist less than 35 inches.
5. Reduce stress – Meditate and get complete sleep.
