As soon as the rain comes, the most concern for the people is the terror of mosquitoes. They have a different eye in the rain, that is, people have to make complete preparations to avoid them. We all know that mosquitoes bite humans and spread dangerous diseases like dengue, malaria and chikungunya. Due to this, hundreds of people also die every year. But have you ever thought that mosquitoes also bite animals? And if you bite, can they also have these diseases? The research of scientists has given an answer to this question, which is necessary for every pet lover to know.

Why mosquitoes bite animals

The female mosquito sucks blood for the development of her eggs. This blood can be taken from humans as well as cows, goats, dogs, cats, horses, birds and even creeping creatures. That is, not only humans, animals also become a target of mosquitoes.

Can animals have dengue?

According to a study published in European Public Health Research (Europe PMC), antibodies have been found against dengue virus in many domestic and wild animals. This means that these animals once came in contact with dengue virus. Research found:

  • Dengue antibodies are found in about 34 percent of pigs
  • Antibodies against mosquitoes in 11 percent birds
  • At the same time, this figure in 4 percent domestic animals (cow, goat)
  • If we talk about dogs, 1.6 dogs have antibodies

However, scientists say that the symptoms of the disease in these animals do not look like humans and it is not clear whether they can spread the virus further.

Danger of malaria

The malaria anopheles spreads from the mosquito and its plasmodium mainly infects humans. Although malaria mosquitoes sometimes cut animals, research has found that such mosquitoes do not thrive in most animals. That is, the risk of malaria is more in humans.

Chikungunya and Animals

Chikungunya Aedes AEGYPTI and AEDES Albopictus spread from mosquitoes. These mosquitoes also bite animals, but till now it has not been proved that pets or domestic animals have chikungunya disease. This disease is found to be almost completely limited to humans.

Mosquito can also spread some other diseases in animals:

  • Japanese Encephalitis (JE) – It is found especially in pigs and some birds and mosquitoes can spread it in humans as well.
  • West Nile Virus (WNV) – It has been found in cow, goat, horses, camels and birds.

Mosquitoes bite humans as well as animals. In some cases, antibodies of diseases like dengue have been found in animals, but this does not mean that they fall ill like humans. Malaria and Chikungunya cases are very low in animals. However, diseases like Japanese encephalitis and West Nile virus are found in animals and can spread to humans.
