Muhammad Yunus Meeting Khaleda Zia Son Tariique Rahman Over Bangladesh Election Sheikh Hasina

Muhammad Yunus-Tariique Rahman Meeting: Amid political instability in Bangladesh, Mohammad Yunus, the chief advisor to the caretaker government, on Friday held a confidential meeting with Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) executive president Tariq Rahman in London. The meeting was held during Younus’s visit to Britain. This meeting between the two leaders has taken place at a time when there are differences and deepening between political parties over the upcoming national elections in Bangladesh.

A joint statement issued after this meeting said that Tariq Rahman proposed to hold elections from Younis before Ramadan of 2026. He also said that BNP president Khaleda Zia also agrees with this opinion.

Elections can be held in Bangladesh ahead of time

In response, Younus clarified that he has already announced to hold elections in the first fortnight of April 2026. However, he also informed that if necessary preparations are completed on time, then elections can be held a week before Ramadan starts. For this, adequate progress will be necessary in improvement and judicial system.

It is noteworthy that this was the first private meeting between Tariq Rahman and Yunus in 2008 after his stay in London. Ramadan is likely to start in mid -February next year. Meanwhile, the top leaders of BNP are continuously demanding to hold elections by December 2025. Tariq Rahman has also reiterated this demand while addressing virtual rallies from London.

Yunus announced the election in the name of the country

Recently, Younus said in his Eid address to the nation, “I inform the countrymen that the next general election will be held in the first fortnight of April 2026”. He also said that the Election Commission will present the election roadmap at the appropriate time. However, this announcement of Yunus was strongly criticized by many political parties of the country.

Last week, BNP General Secretary Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir told the media in Dhaka, ‘April is not suitable for the election from any view. There is a possibility of heat, storm and rain and this time is just after Ramadan. Also, students also have examinations at this time.
