The big face of West Bengal politics and former Union Railway Minister Mukul Roy has passed away. He breathed his last in a private hospital in Kolkata. Mukul Roy’s name is counted among those leaders who gave a new direction to the politics of West Bengal in the last two decades. He was one of the founding members of All India Trinamool Congress (TMC). From the beginning of the party till its strengthening, Mukul Roy’s role was very important. In later years, he also worked as a big leader in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Political journey started from Congress
Very few people know that Mukul Roy started his political career from the Indian National Congress. He was associated with Congress before the formation of Trinamool Congress. After this, along with Mamata Banerjee, he laid the foundation of Trinamool Congress and strengthened the party in state politics.
Mukul Roy was not limited to just state politics. He also held important responsibilities in the central government. During the second UPA term, he was Minister of State in the Ministry of Shipping. Later he was also given responsibility in the Railway Ministry. When Mamata Banerjee resigned from the post of Railway Minister and took over the responsibility of Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mukul Roy was given the additional charge of the Railway Ministry.
The decision to change party created a stir
In the year 2017, Mukul Roy resigned from Trinamool Congress and joined BJP. This decision became a topic of great discussion in Bengal politics at that time. While in BJP, he played an important role in strengthening the party. However, in 2021 he again returned to Trinamool Congress. During this return, his sons were also present with him and Mamata Banerjee herself participated on this occasion.
How educated was Mukul Roy?
Along with politics, Mukul Roy’s education was also very strong. After completing his initial studies, he obtained a bachelor’s degree in science from the University of Calcutta. This university is counted among the old and prestigious educational institutions of the country. Not only graduation, Mukul Roy also did further studies. He obtained MA degree in Public Administration from Madurai Kamaraj University in the year 2006.
