Do Multivitamins Slow Biological Aging: Can taking a daily multivitamin slow the aging process? Such an indication has been found in a new study, although the scientist has advised caution considering its effect to be limited. Actually, age is considered to be of two types, one is chronological age, which means how many years you have lived, and the other is biological age, which reflects the actual condition of the body. It is usually measured by changes in DNA, particularly DNA methylation, which change with age and affect how genes work.
What came out in the research?
This research conducted in America found that taking multivitamins daily can have a mild effect on some indicators of biological aging. However, whether this will directly mean a big improvement in health is not yet clear. 958 healthy people with an average age of about 70 years were included in this study. They were divided into four different groups, where some people were given multivitamins, some cocoa extract and some placebo. During this trial that lasted for two years, blood samples of the participants were examined and changes were observed on five different parameters of DNA methylation.

What was the result?
The research, published in the journal Nature Medicine, found that people who were taking multivitamins showed a slightly slower rate of aging on two out of five epigenetic clocks, especially those that predict mortality risk. Overall, this effect was equivalent to about four months of slow aging in two years. The researcher also found that this effect was slightly more visible in people whose biological aging was happening faster in the beginning. One reason for this could also be lack of nutrition in their body. Whereas cocoa extract was not found to have any significant effect on this process.
What do experts say?
Dr. Howard Sesso, senior author of the study, said that it is not necessary that every person starts taking multivitamins, because it is not yet clear who benefits from it and how much. On this, experts from Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health also said that its effect is very small and it is too early to link it to major health benefits. At the same time, according to Dr. Marco D’Antonio, just taking multivitamins will not be beneficial unless the lifestyle is healthy. The effect of bad habits cannot be completely eliminated by any supplement.
