Mumbai Indians had prepared their team through trade during the retention period before the auction. Many times during the auction the team is not able to prepare as per the plan. In such a situation, Mumbai tried a new method and was successful to a great extent in making up for its shortcomings by including many players in its team at low prices through trade.

Apart from this, four young Indian players Danish Malewar (30 lakh), young left-arm fast bowler Mohammad Izhar (30 lakh), all-rounder Atharva Ankolekar (30 lakh) and all-rounder Mayank Rawat (30 lakh) were included in the team at the base price. Even after completing the squad of 25 in the auction, Rs 55 lakh were left in the account of Mumbai Indians.

Mumbai Indians included all-rounders Shardul Thakur and Sherfane Rutherford in their team through trade. Shardul was traded by Mumbai to Lucknow Super Giants for Rs 2 crore and Sherfed Rutherford was traded to Gujarat Titans for Rs 2.6 crore. Mumbai had made a cash deal for both the players. After this, to make up for the lack of leg spinner in their team, MI included Mayank Markande in their platoon by trading him to Kolkata Knight Riders for a price of Rs 30 lakh.
