The Bombay High Court has acquitted 12 people convicted in the 2006 Mumbai local train blasts. The court said that the prosecution failed to fulfill concrete evidence against these accused.
Reacting to this decision, Congress leader Sanjay Nirupam said, “This decision is very unfortunate. The investigating agencies should investigate the matter afresh. The government and the agency should avenge the murder of innocent people by appealing to the Supreme Court against this decision.”
High court decision and its base
A special bench of Justices Anil Killor and Justice Shyam Chandak said that the evidence presented by the prosecution was not enough to convict the accused. According to PTI, the court acquitted everyone by canceling the death sentence of 5 accused and the life imprisonment of 7.
The court said, “It is difficult to believe that the accused committed this crime. The prosecution failed to prove the case completely.” Now these 12 persons have been ordered to be released immediately if they are not wanted in any other case.
Backgrounds and developments of judgment
On 11 July 2006, there were seven serial blasts in Mumbai’s local trains, in which more than 180 people were killed and hundreds were injured. In this case, 12 people were convicted by a special court in 2015. Of these, 5 were hanged and 7 were sentenced to life imprisonment.
On Monday, when the High Court ruled, all the accused appeared in the court through video conference and thanked their lawyers. There is now a new twist in this 19 -year -old case. This decision of the Bombay High Court is considered to be important not only from the legal point of view but also from the social and political point of view.
