There is only one voice behind all these different songs, which has touched the hearts of the audience by putting every emotion into words. We are talking about playback singer Rekha Bhardwaj, who will celebrate her 62nd birthday on January 24.

Known for her high pitched voice in Bollywood, Rekha’s early life was musical. Her husband was also fond of music, but his parents refused to teach him music considering it inferior. The singer’s father had decided that even if he could not learn music, he would definitely teach it to his children. Then what, Rekha started singing at the age of three, and the main reason behind it was radio.

Rekha herself had revealed in an interview that the radio started playing in her house right from the morning and even though she could not understand the music, she definitely enjoyed it. His father did not cut the cake at home on his birthday, rather he used to organize musical meetings at home with his friends. By the age of 12, Rekha started learning classical music. Thumri and classical music shaped not only his voice but also his soul. After eight years of Riyaz, he realized that singing, especially Ghazal, was his true passion. She often says, “I must have been heartbroken in my previous life.”

The singer started singing at functions and even in college, she used to win people’s hearts with the ghazals in her voice. In 1984, he met Vishal Bhardwaj in college. That meeting changed both Rekha’s personal and professional life. Vishal Bhardwaj and Rekha got married in the year 1991. Rekha never thought that she would lend her voice in the songs of films, because the industry was not ready for her different voice and she faced rejection at every opportunity, but in the year 2002, Vishal Bhardwaj released her album song ‘Ishka Ishka’, the lyrics of which were written by Gulzar.

In his early career, he sang in those films in which Vishal Bhardwaj gave music. He sang for films like ‘Chachi 420’, ‘Godmother’, and ‘Jahan Tum Le Chalo’, but gradually his voice started reaching people’s hearts and the song ‘Namak Ishq Ka’ from the film ‘Omkara’ changed his life.
