Myanmar earthquake: A terrible earthquake occurred in Myanmar on 28 March 2025. This earthquake was the most devastating earthquake in the history of Myanmar. Since the 7.7 magnitude earthquake in the Mandle region, 112 tremors have been felt so far, which has ranged from 2.8 to 7.5. According to the Department of Measures and Hydrology of Myanmar, the death toll in the earthquake has increased to 3,649, while 5,018 people are injured and 145 are missing.
According to ‘The Mirror’, the earthquake has also caused serious damage to the country’s mobile communication system. A total of 6,730 communication stations were damaged due to the earthquake, out of which 5,999 have been repaired. International organizations like India, United Nations, America and European Union have sent relief and rescue teams, medical teams and necessary resources to help Myanmar. UNESCO has also indicated help.
Ata Thingan Festival of Myanmar
The tragedy of the earthquake has also affected Myanmar’s most prominent traditional festival ‘Ata Thingayan Festival’. This festival is celebrated on a large scale every year from 13 to 16 April. However, this time music, dance and other programs related to the festival have been canceled. The Yangon City Development Committee has ordered the suspension of all the public pavilions and programs of the city. The traditional New Year of Myanmar, which is on 17 April, has been asked to celebrate it with peace.
Communication, health and services stalled
Due to the earthquake, 15 post offices in Myanmar had to be temporarily closed, although they are being slowly opened from 31 March. Health services, water supply and power system have been severely affected. Food and drinking water crisis is deepening in rural areas.
