Myanmar earthquake: On Friday afternoon (March 28, 2025), a 7.7 magnitude earthquake in Myanmar, which was felt till Bangkok in Thailand. These shocks were so fast that there was chaos in the entire city, traffic stopped and people started running out of buildings to save their lives.

Prem Kishore Mohanty, an Indian citizen living in Bangkok, made a painful story of this earthquake. Mohanty went to attend a program in his daughter’s school, when suddenly the land started shaking. He said “I felt that my head was moving. The lights and chairs were shaking. Then there was an announcement from the school’s PA system that everyone should get out immediately.”

Mohanty said that the school administration directed everyone to go to the open field and asked to escape from the high buildings nearby. The water of the swimming pool built in these buildings started falling down like a waterfall due to the tremors of the earthquake.

The video of the water falling from the swimming pool on the high floors of the city’s Intercontinental Bangkok Hotel went viral. Mohanty and his family live in Sukhumavit region, where many migrant communities are inhabited. “It was scary and confusing. Suddenly we were asked to get out of our apartment tower. There was panic among people descending the stairs.” According to Mohanty, people living in tall buildings had more impact. His neighbor, a retired German citizen, ran straight with his pet cat and did not stop even to the lobby.

A 30-floor building under construction in the north of Bangkok collapsed due to earthquake. 43 laborers got caught in the rubble, and the relief teams are trying to get them out. Mohanty said, “The earthquake is rare, but the city was still not in full preparation,” although the earthquake protocols were created after the 2004 tsunami tragedy, the Friday earthquake was still successful in stopping the city completely. Mohanty said, “We have been asked to be cautious with the afterchox (earthquake shocks).”
