An unusual protest has come to light at the country’s prestigious management institute Indian Institute of Management Nagpur (IIM Nagpur) where many students boycotted the mid-term examinations. The move was taken to support 40 first-year students who were barred from sitting mid-term exams for being out of campus at night without permission.
According to police sources, on the night of February 21, about 75 students had violated administrative rules by returning late at night after going out for dinner on campus. According to the students, the corps clubs had already informed the authorities about their late return, but when the group returned in the morning and reached the campus gate, they were stopped.
After this, the students were told through e-mail that they would not be able to appear in the mid-term examinations to be held on 24 and 25 February. Some students say that it was a normal farewell program and they were informed beforehand as per the rules, but still strict action was taken. Student leaders alleged that the parents of some female students were spoken to in a derogatory manner.
Peaceful protest against the decision- Students
The administration said that as per the rules, students had to take permission before going out and this ensures their safety and campus discipline. The institute also informed that the students who have been barred will be given a chance to appear in the examination later.
Students termed this action as unfair and said that the result of mid-term examination is important in their overall performance. Due to this, around 60 students refused to appear for their exams and staged a peaceful protest against the administration’s decision.
