CNAP Caller ID System: Now you will not need to use apps like Truecaller to know the name of the caller of calls coming from unknown numbers. The Government of India is bringing a new caller ID system CNAP, which will make it easier to identify the caller. If calls come from unknown numbers, only the numbers are visible, but soon the name of the caller will also be visible along with it. Its testing has started in many parts of the country.
What is CNAP?
The full form of CNAP is Calling Name Presentation. This can be considered a government-backed and verified version of TrueCaller. Apps like TrueCaller depend on crowdsourced data, but CNAP will show the Aadhaar-linked name of the caller along with the number. This system will work on unknown numbers as well as contacts saved in your phone. That is, whenever someone calls you, first the name linked to the Aadhaar card with that number will be visible, then the name of that contact saved in your phone will be visible.
Why is the new system being introduced?
The number of cyber crimes has increased in the country for some time and people are being cheated. This system is being introduced to prevent fraud and spam calls. CNAP portal was approved last month and now telecom companies have started using it. In third-party apps, users can select the username of their choice while creating their profile, but this will not happen in this. It will pick the name of the caller from the Aadhar card linked with the number.
These questions are also being raised
Some questions are also being raised regarding this system. The biggest questions are about privacy and accuracy. Also, no information has been received yet whether users will be able to change their displayed name or not.
