National Boxing Championship: In the ongoing National Boxing Championship in Delhi, Wednesday was in the headlines due to more controversies than sports. While on one hand the country’s star women boxers impressed with their strong performance, on the other hand, in some matches of the men’s category, there was a huge uproar due to indiscipline, referee’s decisions and violation of rules. The incidents inside the ring have also raised questions on the image of the tournament.
Allegation of biting, still the fight was not stopped
The most serious controversy of the day was seen in a match in the men’s category. There was a face to face between boxer Ishmeet of Railway Sports Control Board and Mohit of All India Police. During this time the situation worsened. Ishmeet alleged that Mohit had bitten him on his shoulder in the second round. He also showed bite marks to the referee.
Railway coaches expressed strong displeasure over this decision. He says that this action comes under disqualification. Now a decision on this incident will be taken by the technical officials on the basis of medical report and photographs.
Coach entered the ring in scoring dispute
Another big uproar took place in the 55 kg category. During the ongoing match between Pawan Bartwal of Services and Lalit of All India Police, a dispute arose regarding scoring. During this time, AIP’s coaches and support staff came inside the ring, due to which the match had to be stopped. The commotion continued for a long time and after controlling the situation the officials declared the match abandoned. As per the rules, Pawan Bartwal was declared the winner for not reporting to the ring on time. After all these incidents, the Boxing Federation of India has asked for a report on this entire matter.
Women boxers showed class
Amidst the controversies, the performance of women boxers was a relief. Nikhat Zareen (51 kg) and Kulsuma Bano of Ladakh were face to face in the pre-quarterfinal match. Zareen proved her superiority by showing excellent performance and defeating Kulsuma Bano within two minutes. The fight ended via referee-stopped contest.
Meenakshi Hooda (48 kg) also showed great performance and made it to the quarter-finals by defeating Annu of Jharkhand by unanimous decision.
In the men’s category, Amit Panghal (55 kg) defeated Krishnapal of Chandigarh 4-1 and entered the next round.
