National Consumer Rights Day: National Consumer Day will be celebrated across the country tomorrow i.e. on 24th December. The purpose of this day is to make people aware of their consumer rights. People often go shopping. But they do not know that they also have legal power. Many times companies and sellers take advantage of this shortcoming.

To stop this, the Central Government implemented the Consumer Protection Act 2019. Under which every consumer has been given 6 strong rights. The surprising thing is that even today about 99 percent people do not have correct information about these rights. Let us tell you about them.

right to security

The right to security protects the consumer from such goods and services. Which can become a threat to his life or property. This means that no company can sell such a thing in the market. Due to which the customer gets harmed. If a product poses a risk of injury, illness or death. So the consumer can demand compensation. This right is especially important in matters of electronics, food items and medicines.

right to Information

Right to Information gives the consumer the right to get complete and accurate information related to any goods or services. This includes the quality, quantity, purity, price and conditions of use of the product. If a company sells a product by giving wrong information. So this is considered a violation of the law. The purpose of this right is that the customer can take an informed decision and does not become a victim of any kind of fraud.

Right against forced shopping

Under this right, no shopkeeper or company can force the customer to buy any goods or service. The customer has every right to compare the options and refuse to purchase if he does not like it. Many times extra charges, bundled offers or unwanted services are imposed. In such cases the consumer can exercise this right.

right to be heard

The right to be heard gives the consumer an opportunity to express his complaint openly. If there is exploitation during shopping or there is deficiency in service. So the customer can raise his voice. By going to the consumer forum he can express his views and make the company accountable. This right ensures that the customer’s complaint is not ignored.

right to redressal of grievance

Under this right, the consumer gets the assurance that his complaint will definitely be resolved. If any product turns out to be defective or there is fraud in service. So the customer can ask for compensation. The consumer court can also impose a fine of up to Rs 1 lakh and imprisonment of up to six months on the guilty company. This is the reason why this right is considered very powerful for consumers.

Right to Consumer Education

Right to consumer education makes customers aware and intelligent. Its objective is that the consumer can know his rights, laws and methods of complaint. When the customer is educated. Only then will he be able to avoid misleading ads and false claims. This right makes the market more transparent and honest in the long run.

The first consumer protection law in India was enacted on 24 December 1986. As the needs changed with time, the Consumer Protection Act 2019 was brought. It is important for every customer to know and adopt these rights on National Consumer Day.
