The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has made major changes in the new text book of Class 7 Social Science. In this book prepared for the new academic session 2026-27, this time many chapters of history have been written in a new way. The biggest change has been in the content related to Mahmud Ghaznavi, which till now was limited to just a short paragraph, but in the new book it has been covered in detail in an entire section of six pages.
This chapter has been named “The Ghaznavi Invasions”. In this, a list of 17 attacks carried out by Ghaznavi on the Indian subcontinent is given. Attacks on the temples of Mathura and Kannauj, demolition of the famous Somnath temple of Gujarat and removal of Shivalinga from there have also been clearly described. In the earlier books, there was only a passing mention of these incidents, but now students will get complete information about why these attacks happened and what was their impact.
Information about reconstruction of Somnath temple also
In the new book, students will read when and by whom the Somnath temple was rebuilt. The book also explains why the entire cost of this reconstruction was borne by donations from the common people. Some questions related to this part have also been kept for the students, so that they not only read the history but also understand it.
The horrors of Ghaznavi’s attacks are also included.
The book also tells how a large number of common people were killed in the attacks of Ghaznavi. Prisoners were enslaved and children were sold in the slave markets of Central Asia. Based on historical sources such as al-Utbi and al-Biruni, Ghaznavi is described as a powerful, but extremely cruel and ruthless commander, who also targeted Hindu, Buddhist, Jain, and many Islamic groups.
The book also has a warning message
Before the section on Ghaznavi, a message of caution has been given to the students in a box. It says that in the description of history, more attention is often given to wars and conflicts, while peaceful times and cultural achievements are less recorded. This message has been added so that children can understand history from a balanced perspective.
New content on Gauri and Khilji also
In the second chapter “Turning Tides: 11th and 12th Centuries”, the campaigns related to Muhammad Ghori, Qutb-ud-din Aibak and Bakhtiyar Khilji have also been added with new information. Earlier there was little general detail available on these events, but now this section is in more detail.
Special focus on the demolition of Nalanda and Vikramshila
This time a very detailed description of the demolition of Nalanda and Vikramshila universities has been included in the book. This part was not in the earlier version. The new book tells that monks were killed on a large scale and huge libraries of universities kept burning for months. Historians believe that this was one of the major reasons for the weakening of Buddhism in India.
Along with this, the Arab invasion and the history of Sindh have also been added. New sections on the attacks of the Huns and Arabs have been included in the chapters based on the 6th to 10th centuries. Muhammad bin Qasim’s Sindh campaign has been described as a religious duty based on 13th century Persian sources. The context of historical words like ‘kafir’ has also been explained, so that children do not fall into misunderstanding.
