A big issue related to the education system of the country is in discussion these days. The controversy that started over a controversial chapter related to the judiciary in a Class 8 social science book had reached the Supreme Court. After the court’s strict remarks and the ban on the book, the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has publicly apologized unconditionally.
Two weeks ago the Supreme Court had completely banned this book. The court had ordered that all printed copies of the book be confiscated and its digital version also be removed from the internet. The court said that such material can create a wrong impression about the judiciary in the minds of people.
Apology published in newspapers
After the matter escalated, NCERT published an apology advertisement in many major newspapers of the country. In this apology it was said that recently a social science book for class 8 “Exploring Society: India and Beyond (Part-II)” was published. The title of the fourth chapter of this book was “Role of Judiciary in our society”.
In the apology, the NCERT Director and other members said that they apologize unconditionally and completely for the material published in this chapter. The council also clarified that the entire book has been withdrawn and is no longer available anywhere.

What was the controversy in the chapter?
In fact, in a part of this book, “corruption in the judiciary” was discussed. When news on this appeared in the media, the matter quickly came into discussion. The Supreme Court took suo motu cognizance of this and called it a serious issue. Supreme Court Chief Justice Surya Kant expressed strong displeasure over this. He said that no one will be allowed to harm the reputation of the judiciary. He said in clear words that no matter how big someone is, the law will take its course.
Book supply stopped immediately
After the controversy escalated, NCERT immediately stopped the distribution of this book. Officials admitted that some material had been included in the chapter which was not appropriate. He said that this was a “wrong decision” and this material inadvertently ended up in the book. NCERT also said that the matter is being investigated to find out how this material came to be included in the book.
Court gave strict orders
The Supreme Court took strict action in this matter and banned the book completely. The court said that all printed copies of the book should be confiscated and every version available online should also be removed. The court also said that an in-depth investigation of this matter is necessary. If such cases are ignored, people’s trust in the justice system may diminish. In this case, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta appeared in the court on behalf of the Central Government and apologized on behalf of the Education Ministry.
