Baramati plane crash has suddenly created a different situation on the political situation in Maharashtra. After this accident, questions are being raised regarding succession in the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). This accident happened at a time when the party seemed to be getting stronger under the leadership of Ajit Pawar.
In recent years, Ajit Pawar had emerged as a major power center within the NCP. His faction’s performance in the Maharashtra municipal elections – where the party secured 760 seats – and his position among the 41 NCP MLAs in the state assembly had strengthened his hold on the organisation. After aligning with the NDA and assuming the post of Deputy Chief Minister, Pawar’s political stature grew rapidly, and party workers and second-line leaders began considering him as the rightful heir to Sharad Pawar’s legacy.
The timing of this tragic incident is very important politically. In recent years, internal discussions on a possible reconciliation between NCP factions had come to light several times. Meetings took place and back-channel talks were also claimed. Despite all this, Ajit Pawar’s authority in his camp had become largely undisputed.
What is the future of NCP?
After his demise the main question is who will take over both the organization and the legislative power?
One possibility is Supriya Sule, senior NCP leader and daughter of Sharad Pawar. He has national identity, parliamentary experience and acceptance among some sections of the core party structure. In this period of change, he can be projected as a unanimous face who can stabilize the organization and manage negotiations between factions. Ajit and Supriya had shared the stage together during the corporation elections.
The second center of speculation is around the next generation of the Pawar family, especially Ajit Pawar’s sons, Parth Pawar and Jai Pawar. At present, the immediate priority of NCP is organizational stability. The NCP will have to stop factionalism, keep the MLAs together, and try to strengthen its position within the ruling alliance. The leadership decisions taken in the coming days will determine what happens next?
