Nepal’s Central Bank has issued a new Rs 100 note, but an old controversy with this note has come to the fore again. In the map printed on the note, Nepal has shown Lipulekh, Kalapani and Limpiyadhura as included in its territory. These are the same areas which have been a part of Uttarakhand for years. For this reason, this step of Kathmandu is being considered as a new tension in India-Nepal relations.
According to Nepali National Bank officials, earlier also the map of Nepal was printed on the Rs 100 note, but now it has been changed according to the political map released in 2020, in which all three areas were shown within the border of Nepal. Notes of other denominations do not have maps, so the change has been limited to only Rs 100 notes.
Pictures visible on notes
The obverse side of the new note features the image of Mount Everest on the left and the watermark of Nepal’s national flower on the right. An expanded map of Nepal is given in the middle in light green background. Ashoka Pillar is also printed near it, in which Lumbini, the birthplace of Buddha, is mentioned. A one-horned rhinoceros is visible on the reverse side of the note.
How did the controversy start?
In the year 2020, the then government of Nepal had released a new political map and claimed that due to the origin area of Mahakali river, Lipulekh, Kalapani and Limpiyadhura are part of its actual territory. The Parliament of Nepal had also approved that map. India had termed this step as wrong and said that it does not match the historical facts and administrative reality. Now the matter has become heated again due to the same map being used on currency notes.
What is the basis of the border between India and Nepal?
There is approximately 1,850 km long border between India and Nepal, which passes through 5 Indian states. The Sugauli Treaty of 1816 is considered the basis for determining the border between the two countries. The reason for the dispute is the different interpretations regarding the main stream of Mahakali river. The stream which India considers as the main stream, Nepal calls it as a tributary stream and this is where confusion and dispute arise regarding the border line.
