Nestle NAN Baby Formula Recall: Food and beverage sector giant Nestle on Tuesday announced the recall of some of its major baby nutrition products. The company said that there is a possibility of the presence of a toxin in these products, which can cause problems like vomiting and nausea in children.

The products recalled include SMA, BEBA and NAN brand infant and follow-on formulas. These products are mainly sold in Europe, although according to the BBC report, Nestlé officials have recalled it wherever it is sold around the world.

What did the company say?

The company told Reuters that this decision was taken after a quality problem came to light in an ingredient received from a big supplier. Nestlé then began investigating arachidonic acid oil and related oil mixes used in all of its affected infant nutrition products.

Nestle has clarified that till now no disease or symptoms related to any recalled product has been confirmed. The company also said that this recall, which started on a limited scale in December, is now being done on a large scale. According to the Austrian Health Ministry, this recall has affected more than 800 products made in more than 10 Nestle factories. This is being said to be the biggest product recall in the history of the company.

How to identify the affected batch?

Nestle has released a list of batch numbers sold in different countries, which should not be consumed. The company has said that it is working to minimize any disruption in supply.

Consumers have been advised to check the code on the bottom of the can or pack for powdered formula, while for ready-to-feed formula check the code on the side or top of the outer box and container.

Why was the recall done?

Nestle has recalled these products in Austria, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Switzerland and Britain. The reason given is the possible presence of a toxin called ceruleide, which is produced by some strains of Bacillus cereus bacteria.

According to Britain’s Food Standards Agency, this toxin is not destroyed in the process of cooking, boiling or preparing milk. If it is consumed, symptoms like vomiting, nausea and stomach cramps may soon appear. At the same time, Norway’s Food Safety Agency has said that there is no immediate serious health risk.
