Big news has come for lakhs of students in the country who dream of becoming doctors. The Central Government has taken a big decision to further strengthen medical education. The government has approved 11,682 new MBBS seats for the session 2025-26. Along with this, approval has also been given to start 43 new medical colleges in different parts of the country. With this decision, opportunities for medical studies will increase and the country will be able to get more trained doctors in the coming time.
In a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Health Anupriya Patel shared the latest figures related to medical education. He said that the government is continuously working on expanding the scope of medical education so that the number of doctors in the country can increase.
The data given by the ministry has been prepared by the National Medical Commission (NMC). These figures include information about seats available in government medical colleges, private medical colleges, AIIMS and institutions of national importance in the country.
Increase in MBBS and PG seats
The government has made a big increase in the seats for medical studies for the new session. 11,682 MBBS seats have been approved for 2025–26. 8,967 postgraduate (PG) medical seats have also been approved. These seats will be available in different medical colleges of the country, AIIMS institutes and other institutes of national importance. The government says that this will create more opportunities for admission in medical education and students will get a chance to study better in their own country.

43 new medical colleges will start
Along with medical seats, the government has also decided to start 43 new medical colleges. The opening of these colleges will not only increase opportunities for medical studies but will also strengthen health services in many states. It is often seen that there is a shortage of doctors in small towns and remote areas. With the opening of new medical colleges, hospitals and health facilities in those areas can also improve.
Big change in the last ten years
The data given in the Rajya Sabha also shows that the medical education infrastructure in the country has expanded rapidly in the last ten years. If we compare the situation with the year 2014, today the number of medical colleges and seats has almost doubled.
If we look at the situation in the year 2014, at that time there were a total of 387 medical colleges in the country. During that time, 51,348 seats of MBBS and 31,185 seats of Postgraduate (PG) Medical were available. At the same time, in the present time there has been a huge expansion in the field of medical education. At present there are 818 medical colleges in the country, while the number of MBBS seats has increased to 1,28,976 and PG medical seats have also increased to 85,020.
