Air India Dreamliner: Tata Group-owned Air India has won the supply of ‘Line Fit’ Boeing 787-9 aircraft for the first time. It is also the first ‘Dreamliner’ to join the airline’s fleet in more than eight years. In the aviation industry, ‘line fit’ means that a device, system or feature is installed on the aircraft during the manufacturing (assembly) process of the aircraft, and not afterwards.

Air India acquired ownership of the ‘Dreamliner’ at Boeing’s Everett factory in Seattle on January 7, an official said on Thursday. After inspection by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), this aircraft is expected to reach India in the next few days. This is the first ‘Line Fit’ Dreamliner to be taken by Air India after privatization in January 2022.
Air India last acquired the ‘Line Fit’ Dreamliner in October 2017. When the aviation company was owned by the government. The official said this latest aircraft is its first ‘wide-body’ aircraft and the 52nd aircraft out of 220 Boeing aircraft ordered in 2023.
Air India Express has already received the delivery of 51 aircraft of ‘narrow-body’ Boeing 737-8. This also includes its first ‘Line Fit’ aircraft, which was inducted in late December.
Airbus and Boeing aircraft orders
Following the acquisition by Tata Group in January 2022, Air India ordered 350 Airbus and 220 Boeing aircraft. Six A350 aircraft from the order of Airbus have already been included in the Air India fleet. Air India already has 26 B787-8 and 6 B787-9 aircraft of Vistara.
Vistara has been merged with Air India. Air India Group currently has more than 300 aircraft. Out of which 185 aircraft belong to Air India and the remaining belong to Air India Express. The official said that about a dozen old Dreamliner aircraft can return to service in a new form by 2026.
