There has been a major change at the top leadership level in the country’s largest airline company IndiGo. Company CEO Pieter Elbers resigned from his post on Tuesday citing personal reasons. After this, company co-founder Rahul Bhatia has been given the responsibility of interim management till the appointment of the new CEO.

Interim Chief’s message to employees

After assuming interim responsibility, Rahul Bhatia, in his first message to the employees, talked about the company’s recent crisis and future priorities. Referring to the crisis that occurred in December last year, he said that the situation that had arisen at that time should not repeat itself in the future. He said that neither the passengers nor the employees, especially the frontline staff, should face such problems.

Bhatia expressed his gratitude to those employees who tirelessly handled the company’s operations during those difficult times. Appreciating the dedication of the employees, he said that their new responsibility is not limited only to the customers and shareholders, but also towards every employee of the company.

He reiterated the company’s commitment to strengthen its work culture, improve operations and provide better quality services to passengers.

Why did Peter Albers resign?

In December the company had to face a major operational crisis. Between December 3 and 5, about 2,507 flights were canceled and 1,852 flights were delayed, affecting more than three lakh passengers across the country. After this, aviation regulator Directorate General of Civil Aviation had imposed a fine of Rs 22.20 crore on the airline in January.

The regulator had also warned Albers and two other senior officials for lack of compliance with rules and directed the airline to provide a bank guarantee of Rs 50 crore to ensure long-term turnaround. The company’s parent organization InterGlobe Aviation said in a statement that Peter Albers is stepping down from the post of CEO with immediate effect.

Albers was the CEO of IndiGo from 6 September 2022. He said in his resignation letter that it has been a matter of honor and pride for him to lead Indigo. The company thanked him for his contribution and wished him all the best for his future.
