There is a fierce battle on the ICC’s substitute rule. Rishabh Pant has been injured in the India vs England Manchester Test, there is a fracture in his toe, due to which he is under threat of being out of the series. Meanwhile, new rules have been implemented for replacement in first-class cricket. Now the rule has been made to replace the batsman and the bowler instead of the batsman. However, at present, this rule will be implemented only as a trial.

The rule of like for like replacement in first-class cricket will be implemented from October 2025. The player can be replaced if he gets a serious injury. The purpose of this rule will be to maintain fairness in the match, which does not harm the team whose player is injured.

This rule will be applicable only when the player is seriously injured. The new replacement rule will not be applicable in the event of problems like hamstring or mild pain. This rule of ICC also says that the player who came as a replacement will not take up all the responsibilities that the injured player was handling. That is, a full substitute cannot be replaced in place of the injured player.

A similar situation currently remains in India vs England Manchester Test, where the Indian team will suffer a huge loss due to the injury of Rishabh Pant. Pant had scored 37 runs before the injury in this match and was moving towards the big score. Let us know that Pant has scored more than 450 runs in the current series, so his injury is very bad news for Team India, because this new replacement rule is not applicable in Test cricket at the moment.
