4. Due to genetic reasons, a gene called APOE4 is found more in women, which increases the risk of Alzheimer’s.

What is Omega-3 and why is it important for the brain?

Omega-3 fatty acids, especially DHA and EPA, are considered very important for brain health. About 50–60 percent of the brain is made up of fat. A major part of this is Omega-3 fatty acids. DHA strengthens the membranes of brain cells. It improves the functioning of neurotransmitters, thereby maintaining the ability to think and understand. Deficiency of Omega-3 can weaken memory. The risk of depression, dementia and other mental problems may increase.

Can Omega-3 Help Prevent Alzheimer’s?

Research shows that omega-3 is not a miracle cure, but it may help prevent Alzheimer’s. Its effect has been seen more in the case of mild memory loss (MCI). It improves the health of the brain as well as the heart, thereby reducing the risk of dementia. According to experts, people who have good levels of Omega-3 in their body, mental decline is relatively slow.

Why is this important for women in developing countries?

Elderly women in low-income countries have to face many problems. Such as financial dependence, limited access to doctors and specialists, lack of taking mental health seriously, in such a situation an Omega-3 rich diet, proper counseling and low-cost supplements can be an effective solution. Food items like fish, flax seeds, walnuts are helpful in this. Experts believe that supplements alone are not enough, timely screening, special mental health plans for women, support to caregivers, and more research at the local level are also needed.
