Addressing an Indian-American community program organized on the occasion of Diwali, Zoharan Mamdani reiterated that his view of India is different from that of PM Modi and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

I believe that its pluralistic thinking should be celebrated and efforts should be made to adopt it.
He said, ‘I know that I am contesting for the post of mayor of New York City, which is a city of eight and a half million people. Many people here may have a different opinion than me about Prime Minister Narendra Modi and that is their right and I will represent everyone equally because it is my duty to make sure that every New Yorker feels safe and can live comfortably in this city.
Modi has also been criticized for Gujarat riots
It is noteworthy that Zoharan Mamdani, son of Indian-American filmmaker Mira Nayak, has been a strong critic of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the past as well. He has called PM Modi a war criminal. Apart from this, he also condemned the then Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi for the Gujarat riots in 2002.
Mamdani, who calls himself a democratic socialist, has focused on reducing rising inflation and the cost of living in New York during his election campaign.
