How Baby Poop Shows Health: The child’s first potty after birth may seem trivial, but for a scientist it is no less than a treasure. Many big secrets related to the future health of the child are hidden in this small potty. In 2017, some scientists used to wait for the mail every day in a laboratory of Queen’s Hospital, London. In those envelopes, they used to get small packets, which contained the potty samples of newborn babies, which their parents had sent with great love. This was all part of a larger scientific project called the “Baby Biome Study,” in which researchers were trying to understand how the gut microbiome in a baby’s body affects his health throughout his life. In this study, the poop of about 3,500 newborn babies was analyzed between 2016 and 2017. The results were very shocking. Let us tell you about it.

What do experts say?

Professor Nigel Field of University College London explains that “At the time of birth, the child’s body is completely sterile. Microbes start settling in his intestines only three-four days after birth. This is the moment when his body becomes familiar with external bacteria for the first time and this lays the foundation of his immune system.” Actually, when the child is in the mother’s womb, no bacteria are present there. At the time of birth, when it comes out of the mother’s body, it first meets the microbes which later populate the world of its intestines. Experts say that these bacteria mostly come from the mother’s digestive tract and not from the vagina as was previously believed.

What have scientists said about this?

Scientist Archita Mishra of the University of Sydney, Australia, says, “The initial bacteria of a child’s gut microbiome are like the architects of his immune system. They teach the body which elements are harmful and which are not. These bacteria later influence allergies, infections and even reactions to vaccines.” The bacteria that settle in the baby’s intestines in the first six to twelve months determine the direction of his health, such as the risk of allergies, how strong the digestive system will be and how the body will accept food. According to scientists, the first thousand days of life are the most important. The foundation of the gut microbiome laid during these days will have an impact that lasts for decades to come.

What came out in the research?

Field’s research also shows that newborns whose intestines develop the right bacteria in the first weeks after birth are better able to fight viral infections and immune deficiencies later on. That is, the child’s first potty is not just a waste, but a health report, which tells how his body is developing from inside, how strong his immunity is and how much he will be able to fight diseases in the future.
