A horrific attack took place on Tuesday (3 February 2026) evening in Kwara state of western Nigeria. At least 200 people lost their lives in this attack in two villages, Woro and Nuku. This attack is considered to be the deadliest attack in Nigeria in recent months. According to Reuters report, local MP Mohammed Umar Bio said that an armed group named Lakurawa is behind this massacre. This group is said to be linked to the terrorist organization Islamic State. The attackers entered the villages and attacked people indiscriminately, resulting in the death of a large number of villagers.
According to the Red Cross, the areas where the attack took place are located in very remote areas. These villages are located about eight hours away from the state capital. Moreover, these areas are close to the Benin border and the road and communication facilities there are also very weak. Due to poor connectivity, relief and rescue operations are facing a lot of problems.
The attack was strongly condemned
Kwara State Governor Abdul Rahman Abdul Razak has strongly condemned the attack. He has called it a cowardly action. According to the governor, the attack was in response to the ongoing military operations in the state as security forces continue to take action against militant groups. Nigeria is currently facing a serious security crisis. There has been a rebellion going on in the north-eastern part of the country for a long time. At the same time, incidents of kidnapping, ransom extortion and armed robbery have increased rapidly in the North-West and North-Central regions. Common citizens are becoming the biggest victims of this violence.
