The government of Yemen has completely canceled the death sentence of Kerala nurse Nimisha Priya. This information has been given by the office of Grand Mufti Abubkar Musalupar of Kanthapuram AP of India. The office said in a statement, “Nimisha Priya’s death sentence has been canceled, which was previously suspended.” According to the news agency ANI, the office of the Muslim said, “Earlier, the decision was taken in a high-level meeting in Sanaa, the capital of Yemen, in which Nimisha Priya’s death was temporarily suspended. However, now in a new decision, it has been decided to completely cancel his sentence.

Priya’s hanging was fixed on 16 July 2025, but a day earlier India’s Grand Mufti AP Abubakar Musalup made a personal request to the Yemen government. As a result, the hanging was temporarily stopped. Written confirmation has not been received from the Government of India or the Yemen government regarding the complete ban on the punishment. Organized diplomatic initiative taken by the Government of India has played an important role in this decision.

Nimisha went to Yemen in search of a job
In 2008, 38 -year -old Nurse Nurse Priya of Kerala went to Yemen in search of a job. Nimisha, who came from a Christian family, opened a clinic with Talal Abdo Mahdi, a Yemani citizen in Sana. Meanwhile, Mahdi started harassing Priya. Mahdi publicly declared herself her husband. Seized his passport. He was forced to live in Yemen. However, Priya wanted to return to India, but it was not possible without passport. The situation in 2017 became serious when he tried to withdraw his passport by unconsciousness of Mahdi, but due to excessive drug dose, Mahdi died and a case of murder was registered on Nimisha.

Legal process and death sentence confirmed
After his arrest in 2018, Nimisha Priya was prosecuted and in 2020, the Yemen court sentenced her to death. In December 2024, Yemen President Rashad Al-Ali and in January 2025, Huki leader Mahdi al-Maashat gave formal approval to the death sentence. The matter came into international headlines when various human rights organizations, Indian social workers and media raised their voice against it.
