
Nitish Kumar has been the Chief Minister of Bihar 9 times. He is the longest serving Chief Minister of Bihar. He is one of the prominent leaders of Janata Dal U political party.

The current Chief Minister of Bihar and JDU chief Nitish Kumar was born on 1 March 1951 in Bakhtiyarpur, a small town in Patna district. His father Kaviraj Ram Lakhan Singh was an Ayurvedic doctor. He actively participated in the Indian independence movement.

The atmosphere of Nitish Kumar’s house was full of social service and honesty, which introduced Nitish to the values of public life since childhood.

Nitish Kumar’s early education took place in his hometown Bakhtiyarpur. At that time, resources for education were limited, but Nitish always remained a hardworking and inquisitive student. Seeing his dedication, the teachers inspired him to move forward. From here his educational journey took a new turn.

Nitish Kumar passed his high school examination from Shri Ganesh High School with flying colors and was among the toppers of his class. After this he took admission in Patna Science College, where he showed keen interest in mathematics and science.

In the year 1972, Nitish Kumar obtained a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Bihar College of Engineering (now NIT Patna). During his studies, he joined many technical clubs and worked on projects related to the energy sector.

After degree, Nitish Kumar worked as an engineer in Bihar State Electricity Department, where he made an important contribution in improving the electricity distribution system. Later this experience started getting reflected in his political policies also.

When Nitish Kumar came into politics, he brought with him the practical and analytical thinking of an engineer. His policies always focused on data, planning and results. His approach in areas like energy, roads, irrigation and education was considered technically strong. For this reason people started lovingly calling him Vikas Purush.

After becoming the Chief Minister, Nitish Kumar considered education as the foundation of development. He started many schemes with the slogan of ‘Every Child Read, Bihar Badhe’, prominent among which are Chief Minister Kanya Utthan Yojana, Literacy Mission and Cycle Scheme.
