There is once again a stir in the politics of Bihar. The confirmation of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar going to Rajya Sabha has intensified political speculations. This is not only being considered as Delhi’s innings, but is also being linked to a possible change in power in Bihar.
During the assembly elections held in November 2025, the Bharatiya Janata Party had initially said that the decision on the Chief Minister will be taken in the meeting of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). At that time the party had kept its stand open. Later, considering the electoral mathematics, BJP declared Nitish Kumar as the face of the alliance. Now if the same Nitish moves towards Rajya Sabha, then it is natural to raise the question as to what is the future strategy.
Janata Dal United, i.e. JDU is currently in a strong position with 85 seats. In such a situation, now when the leadership changes, it will not only be a change of position, but will also affect the balance of power within the alliance. BJP has been working on strengthening its organization in Bihar for a long time, hence the change is being discussed from the same perspective.
Nitish Kumar will remain only Rajya Sabha MP or…?
Another big question is what will be the role of Nitish Kumar. Will he remain only a Rajya Sabha MP or can he also become a minister in the central government? If he gets responsibility in Delhi, it will be an indication of his active national role.
Social equations are also important. Nitish Kumar comes from Kurmi (OBC) community. Kurmi voters are not very large in number, but their influence in politics is considered. Apart from this, Nitish is also gaining influence among the extremely backward class, Mahadalit and women voters. If they stay away from the active politics of the state, then it remains to be seen which direction these sections will take.
Meanwhile, there is also discussion about the entry of his son Nishant Kumar. He will join JDU. It is believed that now that Nitish is going to Rajya Sabha, Nishant can become a minister in Bihar government or hold an important post in JDU organization. Minister Vijay Kumar Choudhary said, ‘There is a lot of talk about Nishant joining the party. Everyone in the party wants him to enter politics.
Now the question is, is this Nitish Kumar’s exit plan, or preparation for a new role in Delhi? Is the script being written to bring forward the new generation in Bihar? At present there are more questions than answers – and in Bihar politics the real story often becomes clear only at the last juncture.
