If we look at the journey of Nitish Kumar, known for his strategic moves and sharp political perspective, for the first time in 1977, Nitish Kumar contested elections from Harnaut seat. Nitish had to face defeat in this election. After this, in 1980, Nitish contested elections from Harnaut seat and again lost. After this, he had vowed that if he lost the elections in 1985, he would leave politics, but fate had something else in store. He became MLA in 1985. Since then he has become Chief Minister several times. In 1985, Nitish Kumar won the Bihar Assembly elections from Harnaut in Nalanda district. Four years later, he won the Barh Lok Sabha seat and entered national politics. In 1990, he was made the Union Minister of State for Agriculture and Cooperation in the VP Singh government.
In 1994, he separated from Lalu Prasad Yadav and chose his independent path. He formed the Samata Party along with George Fernandes this year. In 1996, Samata Party came into alliance with BJP and won 6 Lok Sabha seats from Bihar.
Became Chief Minister for the first time in 2000
Nitish Kumar became the Chief Minister of Bihar in the year 2000, only for 7 days. After this, he again became the Chief Minister on 24 November 2005 and completed his tenure. In 2013, he broke his 17-year-old alliance with BJP and took a different path. During this period he had removed 11 BJP ministers from their posts. Resigned from the post due to poor performance of JDU in 2014 Lok Sabha elections.
In the year 2015, he took oath as Chief Minister for the fourth time by becoming a part of the Grand Alliance. Although this tenure was short. After this, on 20 November 2015, he took oath as Chief Minister for the fifth time, but in July 2017, due to political turmoil, he resigned and broke ties with the Grand Alliance. After this, he joined NDA on the same day. Took oath as Chief Minister for the 6th time. In 2020, the NDA alliance won the elections and Nitish became the Chief Minister for the seventh time.
Political turmoil continued during Nitish Kumar’s tenure and on August 9, 2022, he again broke ties with BJP. He became a part of the Grand Alliance and then became the Chief Minister for the 8th time. This trend did not stop again and on January 28, 2024, he broke ties with the alliance and rejoined the NDA. In 2025, NDA contested the elections under his leadership and won. This is considered the biggest victory of his tenure so far. Nitish had initially joined the JP movement as a student leader.
Nitish Kumar’s background
Nitish Kumar was born on 1 March 1951 in Bakhtiyarpur, Patna district of Bihar. His father Kaviraj Ram Lakhan Singh was a freedom fighter and Ayurvedic physician. His mother’s name is Parameshwari Devi. He married Manju Kumari Sinha on 22 February 1973. They have a son named Nishant Kumar. Nitish Kumar completed his primary education from Ganesh High School, Bakhtiyarpur. After this, he obtained engineering degree from Bihar College of Engineering, Patna in 1972. During this time he worked in the Electricity Board.
When was JDU formed?
Nitish Kumar had formed Samata Party with George Fernandes in 1994, but in 2004, Samata Party was merged to form JDU.
