Janashakti Janata Dal national president Tej Pratap Yadav made a scathing attack on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday (January 21, 2026). He questioned his claims of following the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi. Responding to Rahul Gandhi’s allegation that changing the name of MNREGA is an insult to Mahatma Gandhi, Tej Pratap Yadav said that merely adding Gandhi before the name does not make one a follower of Gandhian principles.
‘Did Mahatma Gandhi wear jeans and shirt?’
He said why is he so concerned about who is insulting Gandhi and who is not? He rides a Bullet motorcycle – Did Mahatma Gandhi ever ride a Bullet? He wears jeans and shirt – Did Mahatma Gandhi wear jeans and shirt?
Tej Pratap Yadav said that Mahatma Gandhi promoted Charkha and Khadi throughout the country as a symbol of simplicity and self-reliance. He asked that if Gandhiji was a supporter of Khadi, then why does Rahul Gandhi himself wear jeans and T-shirt? He alleged that Rahul Gandhi does not follow his ideals, and said that symbolism without personal conduct is hypocrisy.
‘Mahatma Gandhi was a symbol of simplicity, restraint and sacrifice’
Tej Pratap said that merely adding ‘Gandhi’ to the name or title does not make one a saint. Emphasized that Mahatma Gandhi was not just an ideology but a symbol of simplicity, restraint and sacrifice. He further said that leaders who invoke Gandhian values should reflect them not only in speeches but also in their lifestyle and conduct.
Let us tell you that in the last few weeks, especially after the Bihar Assembly election results, Tej Pratap Yadav has criticized the leaders of India Alliance, especially Rahul Gandhi. Besides, he has also shown his closeness towards BJP leaders. Recently, on the occasion of Makar Sankranti, Tej Pratap Yadav reached the residence of Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Sinha and congratulated him. On this occasion, both the leaders got a photo session done together, but when they were asked whether Tej Pratap Yadav would join the NDA, both the leaders said that it will be announced only when the time comes.
